What is Accessibility and Why Does it Fall Behind

I have seen interest in DEI explode recently, largely in response to social justice movements like Black Lives Matter and #MeToo. High profile examples of police violence and sexual assault have pointed a spotlight on America’s power structures, and in my sphere, reemphasized the diversity problems in our corporate cultures. While this increased interest is undoubtedly good, we have not seen an equal push for accessibility and equity for people with disabilities.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Aren’t Enough. Make room for Belonging and Accessibility.

DEI efforts in the workplace will never be sustainable without folding in the concepts of belonging and accessibility. I started saying DEIBA™ (I pronounce it “dee-buh”) in training sessions, talks, and workshops more than two years ago when I recognized that DEI wasn’t enough. (link)

Are You Paying Your ERG Leads

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are a hot topic as organizations continue to realize the tremendous impact they have on company culture, policies, products, and overall productivity. When ERGs are empowered, they provide impact across the business and build employee buy-in at all levels. It’s understandable that employees and companies are rushing to create ERGs, affinity groups, DEI committees, and task forces.

THE CASE STUDY RESULTS ARE IN: ARE YOU BURNED OUT AT WORK?

Burnout is all too real--and is a personal topic to me. I feel the pressure living with family, dealing with a COVID world, and working 9-to-5 and 5-to-9 at the same time. I’ve watched many powerful women in my life go through dramatic work related burnout. (link)

MOTHER-DAUGHTER RELATIONSHIP REDEFINED IN THE FACE OF DISABILITY

My mother has suffered from migraines for the better part of 40 years. The general population associates ‘migraine’ with ‘just a bad headache’; those who’ve experienced or have been around someone experiencing a migraine know better. This past year she took a short-term and subsequent long-term disability from her job as a Nutrition & Wellness professor. She feared it would redefine who she was as a working professional, mother, and person. (link)

INVISIBLE DISABILITIES: WOMEN IN THE WORKFORCE

Invisible Disabilities (ID) have been explored by researchers on a limited basis with literature reviews in psychology, medicine, education, business and other areas revealing scarce study and insight. IDs are “both mental and physical conditions that are not immediately noticeable by an observer…”. Regarding IDs in the workplace, as recently as 2014, [it was] noted that, “Workers with IDs encounter unique challenges compared to [all] workers…and even workers with visible disabilities.” (link)
